Re: Ahmed
Wed, June 29, 2005 - 9:32 PMI make most of my sounds using spectral modification software that I've written over the years, and by jamming my microphone into awkward positions as often as possible.
I also use:
* Audacity ( a free audio editing program ) for _really_ basic multi tracking and so forth
* Synapse Audio's Orion Basic ( now defunct, but it does the job for basic sequencing )
* freeware VSTs and a few of me own proprietry ones.
but yeah - many moons ago I read an interview with a dub producer ( the name escapes me ) who, when asked how to duplicate the dub sound, said something to the tune of: "take an old reggae tape, record it onto reel-to-reel, dig a hole in your back yard, have a fire, dance around the fire, swinging the tape around your head, pee on the fire, drop the tape into the (preferably cooled) ashes, bury it, come back three years later. then add effects"
I think that pretty much sums it up :)

Re: Ahmed
Wed, June 29, 2005 - 9:42 PMacidized loops?
Is that loops with their chop points already set?
if so, no. not my thang.
my general workflow for a section is: record hits and weirdness, destroy them, line them up so they sound good/weird/painful, destroy that, tweaky tweaky. then chop it up again.
so yeah - I'm working on a similar concept to that; I break sounds up into more easily digestible chunks. but this is from way before the days of Acid - I started off in computer music using a program called a Tracker - painfully lo-fi by today's standards, it was basically a sampler and a grid where you could trigger 'em.
I still haven't shaken off the habits I formed in those days :)

Re: Ahmed
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 2:53 PMI think I have heard of Audacity. Is that a Linux program?
That is interesting to know how you do this stuff. I like to use a 24 track Hard Disk Recorder I have, a Tascam MX2424 and my mixing board. Then some work in Cubase. I started to use my Gem for Arabic beats.
I would love to send you a 6 minute arabic drum base so that you could add you sounds to it. -

Re: Ahmed
Tue, September 27, 2005 - 2:57 AMyup - it was originally a linux program - but it's available for mac and windows too. audacity.sourceforge.net/
it won't do the job of (say) soundforge, but it's free :)

Re: Questions For Keili:
Thu, October 6, 2005 - 5:41 AMPlease forgive me if this is an idiotic question:
I really like the Tribal Metamorphosis album and although I realise that a lot of it is electronic, the sound convinced me that there are some 'live' recorded instruments on it - at the very least, some of the drums. Am I wrong? -
-
Re: Questions For Keili:
Thu, October 6, 2005 - 8:39 PMAdrian - not an idiotic question at all - in fact a very observant one.
I'm really big on discovered sounds, the electronic side of things is more for arrangement and manipulation. So yeah, most of the base material used on the album comes from "live" recordings - generally more on the random-bits-o-junk side of things.
The more traditional drumming sounds from Sa'iyr (I still insist on calling it that ;p) are mostly Rachel and I.
good phun.

Re: Questions For Keili:
Thu, October 6, 2005 - 9:09 PMWhy did you hace to change the name Keili? -
-
Re: Questions For Keili:
Thu, October 6, 2005 - 9:41 PMThe label insisted that the word "tribal" had to appear somewhere. Basically they felt that people wouldn't know what to expect.
Their suggestion was "Tribal Beats"
*cough* *cough*
So yeah, I compromised with "Sa'iyr: A Tribal Metamorphosis"
But when it came to printing time they'd removed the "Sa'iyr" bit. Which is actually the only bit I wanted to keep :)
hehe. -

Re: Questions For Keili:
Mon, October 10, 2005 - 10:40 AMI have a question and forgive me if this is something that is known generally by other people.
How much contact had you had with belly dance before you wrote the album? My understanding from what I've read is that you were asked to make some music for Rachel which would also go down well in a club. I was just wondering whether you'd had a long (or not so long) association with middle eastern music and dance or whether it was something that came out of this or from knowing people like Rachel. -
-
Re: Answers for Kathryn
Mon, October 10, 2005 - 8:24 PM>> How much contact had you had with belly dance before you wrote the album?
I hadn't even come across ATS or tribal fusion until I bumped into Rachel on the lollapalooza tour, but growing up travelling with my anthropologist/circus-performer mother gave me a fairly solid grounding in a wide range of obscure music. That said, I had my ears opened to more middle-eastern music in a couple months of hanging out with Rach than in the years preceding it.
>> My understanding from what I've read is that you were asked to make some music for Rachel which would also go down well in a club.
That paragraph from the album was actually taken slightly out of context (surpise!); it actually refers to the origin of SomeEye (made for a gig The Indigo did in SF alongside Fire Pixie). A lot of other tracks off the album were also custom-made for gigs (mainly at Amira and Taxim), often with Rachel and I bouncing ideas back and forth in the training room.
>> I was just wondering whether you'd had a long (or not so long) association with middle eastern music and dance or whether it was something that came out of this or from knowing people like Rachel.
I've had a long long fascination with odd rhythms and (for want of a better term) "gypsy sounds."
Also the circus world has always been quite connected with the middle-east and their music/culture (at the Tasmanian Circus Festival this year, there were at least 8 performances to music you could easily hear at tribal fest.. and that's not including the manic rock and experimental electronica!)
so I wouldn't say that I was unexposed to it....
...but... my passion (as in "devotion", "obsession", "comprehension", whathaveyou) for this particular branch of sound can safely be attributed to The Indigo and all the other members of this awesome family :)
(ie. my first real doumbek? from rachel
first real doumbek instruction? rachel and issam
first ATS/fusion belly dancing lessons? rachel
first zaghareet? you get the picture...)
wow. if this response goes on any longer I may start sounding like the 5-year-old in the bath tub practising interview answers :]
------------
oh - and a brief aside, I've been digging through tapes of music I made between the ages of 13 and 18 and found a breaks track that was based around a chopped-up oud and mizmar, and also a few (horrendous) "doof" tracks that appear to be maksoums and saidis :) -

Tue, October 11, 2005 - 11:12 AMSo Keili -
Playing with sounds is extremely fun.... I agree.
I enjoy listening to your music which I loaded from your site (about a year ago before the new site was launched) and its really fun to listen to your.... I dont know if I want to say progression..... Lets say explorations - keeping in mind that I am sure thats only the tip of the iceberg so to speak, supported by the fact you mentioned TAPES AND TAPES AND TAPES....
Do you think - or would you even want to - reach a wider audience (and by this I mean other than the BD Scene).
Do you feel that the term "Middle Industrial" has typecast you?
I'd be willing to bet that you plan on evolving beyond it -if you haven't already.
Hmmm...
In reading what I just wrote - I'd also be willing to bet that the "MI" thing was more a brance on the much larger tree/or as I said - tip of the iceberg type thing - rather part of an evolution....
um - did that make any sense?
perhaps my blood sugar is low - or it could be that there is too much blood in my alcohol system....

Questions for Keili
Mon, October 17, 2005 - 4:15 PMHow did you pick the name "PENTAPHOBE"
What does it mean - I cant find anything - and perhaps I am missing the root of the word - but I figured knowing you (tee hee) that perhaps it had another meaning to you, separate from that which I would have found had I been successful in my search.... -

oh lordy, I'm going to have to start paying more attention :)
actually I just realised I replied to your question, but hesitated to post it because I was... um.. MUCHO chemically altered, and wanted to ch-check mahself first. but since it's such a nice day outside, I'm going to regale you with the long-winded-drunkard-personality's-response:
-----------<SNIP>--------------------------------------------------
>> too much blood in my alcohol system....
HAHAHA :) Love it. Stealing it. :)
>> Do you think - or would you even want to - reach a wider audience (and by this I mean other than the BD Scene).
To be frank, mah darlin' - I had never intended to reach anyone :)
Music is (for the most part) a purely therapeutic endeavor - or, _was_. So I really have no idea what's next, as I hadn't anticipated it being shared on a more global scale.
But.. (and it is a big, voluptuous "but")
there's a little, excited kid inside that would love to reach all sorts of folk.
Acceptance in the IDM world would probably make my day (though I'd probably do my best to act cool on the surface)
The biggest excitement to me is getting my live setup so that it all fits in one little case, and then doing some kind of travelling electronic variety show.. but that might just be the circus blood talking :)
As far as "typecasting" - I'm not quite so sure.. I only tend to sit down with the intention of making a certain style of music when I'm either really drunk, or making it for a specific purpse (ie. a show or some such thing). The thing about music (at least, my experience with it) is that no matter how finished any track may seem, they're all learning experiences. Plus, typecasting exists only in the commercial and internal realms, right? So I suspect I'm more inclined to try new things and risk people telling me I'm a fool, than I am to keep pumping out what absolutely works. I think radiohead are a really good example of that approach succeeding.
I suspect it holds a similar appeal to me that dance does to all of y'awl. "not the destination, but the path" and all that..
That said, since the release of Sa'iyr (as I will forever insist on calling it) I have made a few tunes that - for want of a better term - are "Keili doing bad imitations of Pentaphobe" :)
I love that you refer to it as a "tip of the iceberg thing" my perception of it is more like "another clown in the humorously undersized car", "another fish in the boot" or "another ukulele in the orchestra"
*hovers dangerously under the surface waiting to ruin Leonardo DiCaprio's day*

Tee hee - I had just decided it was too stupid and deleted it - my chemical state being um - only SLIGHTLY altered and I was thinking .... he is going to think you are one cookie short of a bag and leave his own tribe....
~~~~~~~~~~off to the juicy bits~~~~~~~~~~~~
<<"typecasting"
and
I suspect it holds a similar appeal to me that dance does to all of y'awl. "not the destination, but the path" and all that...>>
I agree - and as evidence of my own journey - perhaps I can offer the following....
The first time I heard Teltar apredun was at the show I produced that starred Miz Bricey. And perhaps thats part of the reason why its my personal fav off Sa'iyr - because the first time I heard it was at my show with Rachel, live and in my face - and it pretty was just for me. I. of course had to have the audience there to help me pay the bills - It was completely self indulgent. It had to be done.
So anyway - For almost a year I have associated that song with her performance. Each time I heard it I saw her dancing to it. Now, almost a year later I see myself dancing to it. I am at the visualization stage of the path....I have made that transition on the path...It's mine now.. er - um, I mean...or at least you are loaning it to me briefly each time it is played..
Re: Questions for Keili
Mon, October 17, 2005 - 7:51 PMSpot on, Asharah :)
There are actually many facets to the choice of name, but the primary one is that I was _really_ into Robert Anton Wilson (in particular, his collaboration with Robert Shea: The Illuminatus! Trilogy) at the time. (check out www.rawilson.com/main.shtml .. he also ran for Governor: www.gunsanddope.com/ -- I voted..)
I'll save you the long story, but suffice to say that his influence led me to become a "member" of Discordianism - an absurdist/surrealist "religion" that has Catmas instead of Dogmas.
I'm a Discordian pope.
In fact I'm officially making all present popes as well.
Of course, according to one of the discordian catmas "Us discordians must stick apart" - so that may (or maynot) mean we can't talk anymore.
Feel free to check out www.ology.org/principia/body.html <-- The Principia Discordia, the discordian bible.
Now, if you're a practicing member of another religion, and are offended by this action - please forgive me, you may renounce your papal position.
After all, the fifth commandment is: "A Discordian is Prohibited of Believing what s/he reads"
Try searching google for "law of fives" and ignore any links to the band of the same name. that'll explain some of it.
* When I first came up with the name I couldn't find any usage of it. Since then I've seen it referred to as a "fear of pentagrams". I have no association with that bogus etymology.
* Also a german band recently came out with a track called "Pentaphobia" (the old name of my more personal website), they probably are referring to aforementioned fake etymology. but they won't respond to mah emails, so there's no way of knowing
..... huh. yeah. this is the short answer..... *rolls eyes* hah!
so yeah: RAW, Law of Fives.. oh - and the "phobe" part is actually ironic..
I love fives. <--- for many reasons, but in part due to my old obsession with the golden ratio.
..of course, I have to feign lack of interest now, due to the DaVinci Code fadism..
*squints at dan brown*
wow. that was strong coffee
I think to be honest that we are often exposed to more stuff than we think we are. It just required us to notice it. I didn't realise it until I started dancing but I'm sure it wa around all the time before I just wasn't looking out for it.
